Travelling While You Can

High in the Andes, Peru.

Whether young or old, so often we put off our travelling plans for tomorrow.  Here are a few reasons why you should travel now if you are young.

  • Experience in life can make up for lack of experience in your professional life.  Believe me, as a person who has hired many young people over the years, I can tell who has life experience vs. book experience…..and I will always choose those with life experience first. And what better way to get life experience, then to find yourself in a totally foreign place, out of your comfort zone, eating something you would never eat at home, and trying to converse with the locals.
  • Travel while your expenses are few.  Don’t listen to people who think you must have a mortgage to be successful.  Nobody goes through to the end of their life thinking of all of the nice houses they have lived in- they think of their families, their friends, and what they call home.  And everyone’s ideas of home is different.
  • Travel changes how you relate to the world as a whole and how you relate to others.  Seeing other parts of the world other than your own, and seeing how other people live, will make you realize how fortunate you are…..and more than that, give you a passion for future travelling.
  • Travelling pushes your educational horizons- book learning is all very well and good, but learning about the history of a country by being there will give you a whole other perspective.
  • We are never guaranteed our future- so enjoy your present. That means planning for tomorrow, but living for today.  A balance not always easy to maintain, but one that is worth every penny saved.

If you are looking for an immersive experience, a chance to make new friends, and see new sights, you can try backpacking in either a small group or on your own- whichever makes you feel most comfortable.

Contiki Tours is a company just for 18-35 year olds, what I would call a more conventional mode of tour……but as Contiki says: “Contiki is all about seeing the best sights, making epic memories & no hassle. Independent travel can bring up unexpected hurdles that you just don’t want on your travels. Hauling luggage, trying to find your way on your own & paying for unexpected extras really adds up fast.

It’s pretty simple; you can’t do what we do for less & with less hassle.”

On the other hand, Gecko Adventures offers adventures for 18-39 year olds, and as Gecko says “At Geckos we’ve taken the dorkiness out of group travel. You’ll snack on the tastiest grub, hang out with people your own age (18-39) and clamber aboard public transport, sleep in family run places, see stuff other tourists never knew existed and have plenty of free time along the way.

We tread lightly, think local and make sure our trips are helping not hindering the places we visit. Plus, our local leaders are rad humans.

We’re practically perfect in every way (not really, but we do our best).” This is not conventional travel, and yes you will step outside your comfort zone.

G Adventures offers fun for all ages, with lots of travel styles. But if you are 18-30 Something, their YOLO vacations are for you.

Got fun if you want it.

Youth is a limited-time offer. Squeeze more out of yours with Yolo – fast-paced and affordable adventures designed for young travellers.
