Want to head south, but you’re getting sick of the resort life? Or perhaps you simply are not a resort person- but you do want to head south? There are a number of alternatives to resort vacations……
For those who have a “healthy” budget- I would consider heading to Cuba on a small group tour, staying in Casa Particulares, touring cigar factories, heading out on a catamaran, and checking out the streets of old Havana. For trips of this nature, consider Gadventures or Peregrine Travel- although be warned- trips are and have filled up fast for this winter. (Trips are from $999 plus flights)
If there is nothing left for your dates in Cuba, consider touring Mexico and Central America as an alternative to resort vacations. For those who like a bit of comfort by night, and adventure by day, consider this 15 day vacation- Mexico in Depth. “This is our most comprehensive tour in Mexico. Having explored Mexico City and the great ruins of Teotihuacan we discover the delights of Puebla and Oaxaca. From Monte Alban we visit the ruins of the Zapotec capital before continuing southward to the town of San Cristobal, complete with its traditional Indian communities. The magnificent Palenque Mayan ruins are next and then comes the Yucatan Peninsula with stops in Merida and the Mayan sites of Uxmal and Chichen Itza.” Priced from $3665 plus flights, this trip will truly give you a taste of historical Mexico.
If you are a true adventurer with a much smaller budget, consider this short 8 day trip- Land of Belize- offered by Intrepid Travel- from $1140 plus flights.

Once a powerful Mayan city, Tikal was abandoned in the 10th century and sank into the surrounding jungle. It’s now alive with jungle wildlife and awe-inspired visitors.
