I was lucky enough to spend almost a week exploring Provence in 2012- with wonderful memories of the wine, food and scenery. Having read A Year in Provence and absolutely loved it, I was determined to go and visit- and so I dragged my husband along and off we went on a self-drive vacation- making Apt our central location (a small hotel downtown) and driving the countryside from there. France’s roads are for the most part well-signed, and although a bit narrow compared to North American roads, for the most part quite acceptable. Be wary though of the areas through the mountains- hairpin curves about with not a lot to stop and unsuspecting driver going a little too fast!
Enough warnings- now what to see? These were some of the sights in Provence we chose- listed in no particular order. You may choose differently…..be sure to contact me for information about any or all!
- Verdon Gorge
- Aix-en-Provence – Avignon – Saint-Remy-de-Provence
- Wild horses and flamingos in the Camargue Wetlands
- The ancient stone village of Les Baux
- Cassis on the Mediterranean- a beautiful coastal town
- Roussillon of the ochre cliffs
- The town of Uzès with the aqueduct – Pont du Gard nearby.
- Gordes, known as one of the most beautiful villages in France.
- Abbaye de Sénanque and its lavender fields
