Looking to Head Somewhere Different this Autumn?

Heading Somewhere Different in Autumn

As you can see from my post yesterday on Facebook, there is a wide variety of places to visit in the autumn months, and although we are nearing the end of August, it is not too late to book that autumn getaway and head somewhere different this autumn…….

Certainly although last minute trips to popular destinations with tour companies such as Trafalgar or G Adventures may be full, there are other destinations just waiting for travellers such as yourselves to visit and discover- for some an independent trip would be perfect- for other destinations a tour of some sort will enable you to go places you might not normally explore.

Where are some of those “different” destinations?  Well Turkey is certainly one, and a destination high on my list…….right next to Jordan and Israel perhaps for next fall- or Egypt.  I often head somewhere in October as that is a perfect travel time for me- gardens almost done and do not need as much attention, and my travel business has not yet hit the winter booking peak months…….

Rough Guides describes Turkey as “A mesmerizing mix of the exotic and the familiar, Turkey is much more than its clichéd image of a “bridge between East and West”. Invaded and settled from every direction since the start of recorded history, it combines influences from the Middle East and the Mediterranean, the Balkans and Central Asia. Mosques coexist with churches, Roman theatres and temples crumble near ancient Hittite cities, and dervish ceremonies and gypsy festivals are as much a part of the social landscape as classical music concerts or football matches.

The friendliness of the Turkish people makes visiting a pleasure; indeed you risk causing offence by declining invitations, and find yourself making friends through the simplest of transactions.

At the big resorts and tourist spots, of course, this can merely be an excuse to sell you something, but elsewhere, despite a history in which outsiders have so often brought trouble, the warmth and generosity are genuine.”

This is one country I would definitely explore with a small group tour- a chance to really see the country, and at the same time feel perfectly safe……Peregrine offers a number of small group adventures in Turkey, but they are definitely not the only company.  As well, more traditional companies like Trafalgar offer larger group tours in their own inimitable style- it all depends on your own travel style…….

The next destination is an unusual one- and that is Taiwan……yes a small island country, but with gorgeous scenery, and an easy stopover to and from other Asian destinations! As well, often large trade shows are held here- why not combine business with pleasure?

Again- Rough Guides has this to say about Taiwan:

“Taiwan remains largely undiscovered and seriously underrated by Western travellers, but those that make it here are in for a real treat. In the 1990s Taiwan became the first true Chinese democracy, developing a sense of civil society bewildering to its giant neighbour across the Taiwan Strait. Since then, popular culture has blossomed on the island, an eclectic mix of Chinese, Western, Japanese and indigenous influences.

It has sensational food, traditional Chinese and aboriginal festivals and exuberant temples, yet the biggest surprise is Taiwan’s hinterland: think towering mountains, eight national parks, a selection of alluring offshore islands and numerous hot-spring resorts.”

Here I would recommend this small group tour: Treasures of Taiwan.  Described as an opportunity to discover the cities, indigenous cultures and natural wonders of Taiwan- this 11 day journey priced from $3676 CAD plus flights will take you off the beaten path in comfort……

Close By Destinations (so to speak)

If your budget simply won’t allow those kinds of trips currently, here you might want to consider exploring the east coast of Canada or the United States (Maritime provinces or the Northeastern Seaboard), driving the spectacular Blue Ridge Parkway, or even consider exploring the Napa Valley and their many wineries……something for everyone!  Chicago and New Orleans also both have lots to offer- contact me today to help you plan and book your independent vacation.

All this to say, this is a big world, with lots to see and do…….contact me today to book that special vacation for this autumn.
