One Good Reason to Travel Now

Or Why I Don’t Wait Until the Time is Perfect

I was reminded this past weekend about how important it is to seize the day, or to travel while you may. Disbelief and incredulity- that was what I felt when I first heard that Nepal had been hit by a devastating earthquake.  As reports poured in of the widespread destruction, my first thought was how lucky we are, and secondly, how lucky I was. As some of you may know, I was fortunate enough to spend a week in Nepal in March of 2013.  At the time, I chose to travel on my own to India to join a small group tour with Intrepid Travel– I was stepping way outside my comfort zone.

If I had not done that, this earthquake news item may have been “just another disaster” story- instead I have key memories of the ancient sites of Kathmandu that I was lucky to see -which are now destroyed. I also saw just how little infrastructure was in place at that time. Large machinery was rare for road works (picture men and shovels), and even the electricity in Kathmandu was not a 24-hour proposition. The current search and rescue operations will be difficult, and then the re-building of Nepal will certainly be a challenge without infrastructure.

Travel companies such as Intrepid, their sister company Peregrine, Exodus out of the UK, and G Adventures are all raising funds with their not-for-profit organizations. Other organizations firmly rooted in Nepal such as World Vision, Plan Canada and Doctors Without Borders, along with UNICEF, are also raising funds for disaster relief.

Many times we plan on “doing something later”, not realizing that later may never come. Ancient sites are destroyed by nature or by man, a trip planned may not take place for a myriad of reasons.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
