I am often asked for short summer getaway ideas- most of my Canadian clients enjoy the Canadian summers and prefer not to go too far away……unless they have children and like to travel while they are out of school. To that end here are a few brief ideas!
Let me start by exploring our own cities- Ottawa, Montreal and Quebec City are all great destinations for families or for getaways, with the opportunity for the kids to practice their French! Ottawa has so much to see and do, and easily driveable by car- although a different experience might be to take the train. Gros Morne NP, Newfoundland
St John’s Newfoundland- or Newfoundland in general, is on a lot of people’s lists…….for a 4-5 night vacation in St John’s, there are hotel and flight packages available for just $1134– at excellent rated hotels such as the Courtyard by Marriott. Rent a car and go exploring. Conversely, consider flying into Deer Lake or Cornerbrook, rent a car, and go exploring (with my help of course!)
Another option is to head for a quick European vacation of some sort….Head to a city like Paris, France or Dublin with the family for a city break. The family will be blown away……prices start from $1700 pp and up, flights and hotel included……
If the dollar doesn`t give you pause for thought, consider heading to the states. Not only are the cities great for families, this year is a big birthday celebration for their national park system. Consider joining an organized tour to celebrate the parks, or simply head out on a road trip. If however, exploring some cities are more in your style of travel, consider the following:
Fun in Vegas
Vegas baby……yes that is right. I know Las Vegas is hot, but here is a fairly inexpensive getaway for all kinds of reasons- girlfriend getaways, family getaways, couple getaways.
There is lots to do from heading out to see the beautiful Red Rock National Conservation Area just outside of Las Vegas- stark and beautiful- to shows, entertainment of all kinds, with day trips (or longer) available to the Grand Canyon.
Flight and hotel packages start from as low as $700 for 4 nights for hotels such as Paris Las Vegas in July and/ or August.

Chicago or New York City……yes again I know it is summer- and can be hot (there is air conditioning!) but I would be remiss if I didn’t at least mention these two great cities for their summer festivals and activities. Central Park in NYC, the various museums, heading out on a tour of the harbour are just a few options……go to Chicago and there are the Lake vistas/ walks, stunning architecture, river cruises- again just to name a few.
To stay downtown in either city, there are a number of flight and hotel packages from Toronto starting from $1000 and up in July or August for a 5 day vacation. Another option is to enjoy the cross country drive, stay outside of the downtown area, and take the excellent public transportation to the downtown area- this vacation could be less expensive.
