More Amsterdam!

As I mentioned in my last post, I also chose to spend extra time in Amsterdam on my way home.  This time I was completely on my own, but having already had a sampling (so to speak) of the city, I was very much looking forward to my final few days, and to exploring more Amsterdam!

My Accommodations

This time I decided to stay at a small boutique hotel in the Museum District, just one block from the Van Gogh Museum- which coincidentally was my first outing the day after I arrived.  Truly my favourite museum of the two (Rijksmuseum being the first I saw)-perhaps because I am a huge fan of Van Gogh- plus I loved the way the museum and works were displayed……it told a story.

Back to the boutique hotel- kudos to the small boutique hotel- Hotel Fita– a comfortable small hotel with a fabulous breakfast to start the day!  Highly recommend this conveniently located hotel……..with a small elevator which was certainly a bonus!

This location is also just a block from Amsterdam’s Rodeo Drive for any travellers that like to shop, and close to several good restaurants- the best was The Seafood Bar where again I was able to slide in at the last minute for some delicious seafood.

My Activities

Beside the Van Gogh Museum, I also headed out on a small group day trip to explore the windmills of the countryside, a cheese making facility/ farm with tastings, and visits to a couple of small villages.  A great way to see a bit of the countryside.

Touring the Countryside

My last day, despite the forecasted rain, I decided to walk as much as possible. I headed to the Jordaan area just past the Anne Frank house to browse in some small shops, before cutting up towards Central Station, and then across towards the Resistance Museum and the Botanical Gardens. Great exercise and a great way to see more of the city- and some more of the history of the city. I then caught a couple of trams back to my room, where I enjoyed a glass or two of red wine before heading to an Indonesian restaurant a couple of blocks away.

Walking in the Botanical Gardens in Amsterdam

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable exploration of Amsterdam- both coming and going…….

If this style of travel suits you, be sure to stay tuned to my posts, and then travel with me on my next trip of this sort…..

Kenya and the Classic African Safari

I returned last month from a wonderful safari in Kenya- just the sort of exciting trip one reads and dreams about, and I was thrilled that it met all my expectations. From the first time I started researching Africa in 2009, this trip has been part of my travel dreams. This particular trip was what I would term, the Classic Kenya Safari and most of the trip took place in one of the top rated National Parks in Africa, the Maasai Mara.

A Little About The Park

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages (enkangs) of Maasai people.

  •  Area: 1,510 km²
  • Location: Kenya, Rift Valley Province

Here we spent 3 nights at a Permanent Tented Camp in true luxury (okay- I am sure there are more luxurious camps, but this one really was top notch!).

We headed out on two safaris per day- once early in the morning and once late in the afternoon until almost dark.  We saw all of the wildlife we could handle……here are just a few samples!

As well, we spent a couple of nights at Lake Nakura National Park, and here we stayed in a wonderful lodge.  And again- a couple of safaris a day……with all of the wildlife watching we could imagine.

Highlights

Definitely the wildlife, as well as the hot air balloon ride.  Yes it was pricey, but more than worth the experience.  The experience should not be missed if you are going all that way!

The Safari Itself

This was booked with Exodus Travels out of the UK, and as usual they surpassed themselves.  The trip was all it claimed to be, and for what I think was a fairly reasonable price.  As one researches safaris, one discovers that experiences such as this are not inexpensive…… For one week, this trip is priced from $3605 to $4275, depending on the time of the year one goes…..

Included:

  • All breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners
  • All accommodation
  • All transport and listed activities
  • Tour leader throughout

This is rated at 5* (out of 5*), and I cannot recommend it highly enough……
