Kenya and the Classic African Safari

I returned last month from a wonderful safari in Kenya- just the sort of exciting trip one reads and dreams about, and I was thrilled that it met all my expectations. From the first time I started researching Africa in 2009, this trip has been part of my travel dreams. This particular trip was what I would term, the Classic Kenya Safari and most of the trip took place in one of the top rated National Parks in Africa, the Maasai Mara.

A Little About The Park

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers. The area nearby is dotted with villages (enkangs) of Maasai people.

  •  Area: 1,510 kmĀ²
  • Location: Kenya, Rift Valley Province

Here we spent 3 nights at a Permanent Tented Camp in true luxury (okay- I am sure there are more luxurious camps, but this one really was top notch!).

We headed out on two safaris per day- once early in the morning and once late in the afternoon until almost dark.  We saw all of the wildlife we could handle……here are just a few samples!

As well, we spent a couple of nights at Lake Nakura National Park, and here we stayed in a wonderful lodge.  And again- a couple of safaris a day……with all of the wildlife watching we could imagine.

Highlights

Definitely the wildlife, as well as the hot air balloon ride.  Yes it was pricey, but more than worth the experience.  The experience should not be missed if you are going all that way!

The Safari Itself

This was booked with Exodus Travels out of the UK, and as usual they surpassed themselves.  The trip was all it claimed to be, and for what I think was a fairly reasonable price.  As one researches safaris, one discovers that experiences such as this are not inexpensive…… For one week, this trip is priced from $3605 to $4275, depending on the time of the year one goes…..

Included:

  • All breakfasts, 5 lunches, 5 dinners
  • All accommodation
  • All transport and listed activities
  • Tour leader throughout

This is rated at 5* (out of 5*), and I cannot recommend it highly enough……
