How I Decide on What to See…..

  • Shall I stay any extra time at either end of the trip?  (If I am going half way around the world, I tend to figure I should add on some days if there is something else I want to see……I am a big believer in that maxim you only live life once, and so you should live it to the fullest- within reason of course!  I don’t believe in being overly extravagant- I do believe in using my money to the best advantage!)
  • What are my “must sees” for my free time if I am on a tour- or if I am travelling on my own……

530px-Italy_regionsWhen I am considering extra time on a trip, I think about where I am going, how much of a culture shock I am facing, and where I want to spend my extra time.  Although Italy isn’t much of a culture shock, I think I will feel more comfortable to spend my extra days at the end of the trip.  By the end, I should at least be ordering coffee and wine in Italian, be able to figure out a menu no problem (for the most part), and cope with other practicalities. But where to spend my time…..as I am in the southern part of Italy in October- likely I will stay there.  Having said that, my reading about Naples has not convinced me it is the best spot to spend my extra time.

The scenery of the Amalfi Coast and Island of Capri could be a big draw- but I have also read that this area is an incredibly pricey one…..not sure it would be good value for my money.

On the other hand, Rome is only a short train ride from Naples- so perhaps that might be a better option…..head back that direction, and fly out from there.  So some delving into guidebooks is going to need to happen before I book my flight.  And I need to peruse a few more books and do some more research before deciding on my must sees……so let’s leave Italy for now, and consider it in more detail in September when my trip is firmed up in its entirety……
